How We Help

sdbm charity auction

With your kind and generous donations, SDBM are helping to design and manage many positive solutions.

Treatment Centre StudioOfficePlea

Our main goal at SDBM is to launch a skin centre where patients and sufferers can get expert care and advice. This centre will provide a retreat and access to support groups, workshops, help with managing treatment, art therapy and much more. More importantly, the centre will also specifically invite friends and family, allowing them to receive the same education and experience firsthand the care and treatments as a skin disease sufferer whilst being tutored in treatment and relief techniques.

Research Research

For many sufferers of skin conditions and diseases, there is no cure, only the prospect of management and temporary relief. SDBM will work with leading dermatology consultants, experts and scientists to work on and discover cures and better treatments. Gaining access to research journals and collaboration with clinics, hospitals and other research facilities. As new, and rare, diseases are discovered it is necessary to provide access to medical information so that patients can make informed decisions about their treatment. There is a lack of information and awareness in the general public and we aim to make it possible for all those who want to have more information be able to do so in a safe and understanding environment.

Education and Advice lecture

Invariably, the more information and knowledge a sufferer has about any given condition, the better they can recover and heal, be it treatment techniques, triggers, dietary recommendations or allergy advice. This education is also important for the families, friends and carers of sufferers and is delivered in a range of mediums.

  • Lectures – given by speakers that range from professors, nurses and skin therapists, to other sufferers of skin disease.
  • Materials & Leaflets – we will produce information and advice leaflets on a range of conditions and diseases, with key advice, tips and points of contact for further guidance.

Medical Equipment & Supplies

SteamCleaner

Patients and sufferers should naturally follow medical guidance and advice and use the appropriate medications prescribed. However, there are a range of other pain relief techniques and methods not available on the NHS which, when coupled with our education programme, will be an invaluable aid to sufferers and their families.

  • Steam Cleaners

This is top of the line cleaning equipment aimed at providing a cleaner, safer and more hygienic environment to skin sufferers, while also being faster than traditional cleaning methods thereby limiting exposure to dust, allergens etc. Steam purifies indoor air of dust, dust mites, pollen, smoke particles, fumes from traffic, indoor chemicals, allergens and the thousands of pollutants that find their way into our homes. Initially for demonstration and information purposes further donations will allow us to eventually provide this equipment to sufferers.

Respite

DeadSeaMud3

Often patients rely on the invaluable support of families and carers who selflessly dedicate their own lives to their loved ones. We provide dedicated care and respite packages

  • Rehabilitation Plans

These are plans tailor made for skin sufferers to assist them in reintegrating themselves in the workplace and society while offering them support both physically and psychologically.

  • Treatment Trips

These are organized trips designed specifically for sufferers to reintegrate themselves into a social setting, while in a remote and safe environment that also provides respite and recovery.

  • Awareness Events

Events aimed at promoting awareness, overcoming stigmas and facilitating an informative and supportive environment focused on helping those recently diagnosed to get appropriate and relevant information.

SDBM Explore Activity Camps

Physical and social activity can lead to enhanced psychological well-being and improved quality of life, in the areas of control and self-esteem. For example, increased confidence, better cognitive functioning, reduced anxiety and stress and decreased depression. The aim of SDBM Explore is to encourage children to develop their physical and social well-being, as well as provide respite for carers.

SDBM Explore is aimed specifically at children and young adults aged between 7-17 affected by skin conditions to help bring them out of social exclusion and help develop their confidence and self-esteem. Under the expert care of volunteer dermatologists and nurses, children suffering chronic skin conditions will benefit from a week of fun and adventure, while meeting others facing similar challenges and learning they are not alone, as many encounter physical and psychological barriers, they feel uncomfortable with the idea of physical and social activity because of the pain, discomfort and embarrassment experienced. By shielding their condition and abstaining from any form of activity, they try and hide from these uncomfortable feelings. These barriers also cause decreased social interaction and social development.

Mobile Wellness

MobileGymWellnessExercise-

Due to severe pain and long periods of not being able to move due to the skin tearing/splitting, mobility is a major problem for many sufferers of skin disease. Joints can become stiff also. Lack of exercise can also lead to other underlying health problems.

Nutrition-

Many foods can exacerbate inflammation in the skin for some skin disease sufferers, such as gluten, sugar and dairy. A balanced diet is important for maintaining good health. SDBM will be looking at foods which can help build up the immune system and  aid recovery as well as management of a person’s skin condition.

We have partnered up with Ayurvedic Therapists, Fitness Instructors, Osteopaths and Nutritionists to provide support by taking the help to sufferers of skin disease who have become socially isolated to help with stress management, mobility exercises and nutrition to help improve their physical and psychological well-being.

One of the hardest things for a sufferer of skin disease is using transport to get to a destination or appointment and waiting to be seen, whilst being self conscious about their appearance or not being able to dress properly because they need to be lathered up in emollients or covered in bandages or they are struggling to move because of the pain they are in.

Career Advice & Support

AdVICE

We work with sufferers who want to work but are prevented from doing so as a result of their debilitating condition. We work with them to identify their skills and help them get expert career advice so that they can gain appropriate qualifications and find the right job which will fit with their lifestyle and regimes.

We welcome all suggestions.

DONATE FOR ART THERAPY CENTRE
SDBM Art Therapy has been setup to give people an outlet as a means of expressing themselves through visuals,
as well as being an aid to diverting attention from pain the relief of stress, which can trigger and/or exacerbate skin disease.

Our plan is to provide the best educational workshops available that are both relevant and applicable to not just skin disease sufferers but the general public. We are currently working hard in filtering these workshops to provide an assortment that will provide this and filter the best from the best. We therefor ask you to bear with us and have a little more patience until we reveal this unique list of assorted workshops.
DONATE FOR CHILDREN
SDBM is working on behalf of children around the world who suffer from various skin conditions. We have several causes for kids ranging from subsidizing breaks to the Dead Sea for therapy and relief to designing visual stimuli to keep the young minds calm, informed and balanced.

Skin disease can have a huge impact on children, effecting their childhood, their development, self-esteem and confidence.
Skin disease also causes sleep disturbances, which can lead to behavioural deficits, potentially impacting on a child’s academic and social development.

Therefore, it is important that education starts early from schools and awareness is raised; support provided to the child, as well as strategies and support to schools in dealing with any treatment they may need to aid in and the support they may need to provide.

The prevalence of skin disease exceeds that of obesity, hypertension, or cancer. Despite skin being the largest organ of the human body, dermatological research remains one of the most under funded areas of medicine. In a world where society has an increasing preoccupation with image and it’s importance to every aspect of a person’s life, sufferers of skin diseases are feeling and being more marginalised and isolated than ever.
