SKIN DEEP BEHIND THE MASK
cordially invite you to
The 2015 Inaugural Annual
18th September 2015
GROSVENOR HOUSE HOTEL
The evening promises to be nothing less than extraordinary, awe-inspiring, breath taking, and show stopping! An evening where beauty is not only skin deep but also behind the mask!
This glamorous fundraising gala consists of a memorable evening including an exquisite dining menu, whilst participating with visual delights such as, two fashion shows, an art exhibition like no other, an auction to bid for not one but two luxury cruises in the Med, and an opportunity to make a glamourous difference to help raise funds for skin disease sufferers and their carers alike, simply book a ticket or two.
This worthy fundraising gala, apart from being an evening to remember, will increase awareness of the debilitating affect skin disease of all types can have on patients, their families and carers. SKIN DEEP Behind the Mask (SDBM) is unique as it is the only UK charity concerned with all skin diseases. It is estimated that 8 million people in the UK are suffering with skin disease.
Skin disease is widely misunderstood and the profound affect it can have on sufferers’ psychological and social wellbeing is under-appreciated. Those not directly affected by skin disease tend to trivialise them. Some even find them repellent. Their indifference or distaste is often exacerbated by the misplaced assumption that skin diseases are contagious or that they are caused by poor hygiene. There may even be doubt in the public mind that skin diseases count as a sickness in the ordinary sense of the word.
SDBM combats this prejudice through education, raising awareness of the issues of skin disease; building a supportive community of sufferers and their carers and providing services that alleviate their suffering. The aim is also to give sufferers ‘Hope’- the ‘hope’ of improving their quality of life. Many months and years can go by where a skin disease sufferer is completely isolated and confined to one space because of the monotonous and repetitive treatment regime and the pain caused by mobility because the skin is raw and split. A huge period of a patient’s life is lost. It is like having your freedom taken away and you are imprisoned by your condition.

The prevalence of skin disease exceeds that of obesity, hypertension, or cancer. Despite skin being the largest organ of the human body, dermatological research remains one of the most under funded areas of medicine. In a world where society has an increasing preoccupation with image and it’s importance to every aspect of a person’s life, sufferers of skin diseases are feeling and being more marginalised and isolated than ever.
