SKIN DEEP BEHIND THE MASK
cordially invite you to
The 2015 Inaugural Annual

18th September 2015

GROSVENOR HOUSE HOTEL
MAYFAIR, LONDON

The evening promises to be nothing less than extraordinary, awe-inspiring, breath taking, and show stopping! An evening where beauty is not only skin deep  but also behind the mask!

This glamorous fundraising gala consists of a memorable evening including an exquisite dining menu, whilst participating with visual delights such as, two fashion shows, an art exhibition like no other, an auction to bid for not one but two luxury cruises in the Med, and an opportunity to make a glamourous difference to help raise funds for skin disease sufferers and their carers alike, simply book a ticket or two.

This worthy fundraising gala, apart from being an evening to remember, will increase awareness of the debilitating affect skin disease of all types can have on patients, their families and carers. SKIN DEEP Behind the Mask (SDBM) is unique as it is the only UK charity concerned with all skin diseases. It is estimated that 8 million people in the UK are suffering with skin disease.

To be held at the world-renowned Grosvenor House hotel in London’s Mayfair, the Ball is a great way to have fun in style while supporting important and currently invisible causes.

SKIN DISEASE IS WIDELY MISUNDERSTOOD. PLEASE BE ADVISED EXPLICIT IMAGES AHEAD

Skin disease is widely misunderstood and the profound affect it can have on sufferers’ psychological and social wellbeing is under-appreciated. Those not directly affected by skin disease tend to trivialise them. Some even find them repellent. Their indifference or distaste is often exacerbated by the misplaced assumption that skin diseases are contagious or that they are caused by poor hygiene. There may even be doubt in the public mind that skin diseases count as a sickness in the ordinary sense of the word.

SDBM combats this prejudice through education, raising awareness of the issues of skin disease; building a supportive community of sufferers and their carers and providing services that alleviate their suffering. The aim is also to give sufferers ‘Hope’- the ‘hope’ of improving their quality of life. Many months and years can go by where a skin disease sufferer is completely isolated and confined to one space because of the monotonous and repetitive treatment regime and the pain caused by mobility because the skin is raw and split. A huge period of a patient’s life is lost. It is like having your freedom taken away and you are imprisoned by your condition.

Our mission is ‘providing Education, Guidance and Support to skin disease sufferers and carers alike.’ This encapsulates what we do. The charity aims to improve the lives of skin disease sufferers and those who care for them through the provision of high quality and innovative services and projects.

MOBILE WELLNESS

Lack of exercise is a major factor contributing towards 'sick skin'. Lack of movement due to pain in the skin and doing no exercise makes circulation sluggish, and the blood which feeds the skin becomes toxic.

ADULT ACTIVITY CAMPS

Will promote social inclusion, build self-esteem and confidence; offering a range of water-based activities from facilities second to none, including powerboat, sailing & windsurfing courses and more.

CHILDRENS ACTIVITY CAMPS

the Activity camp will help promote social inclusion, build self-esteem and confidence and offer an array of activities that will include archery, quad biking, group therapy, sports and team games, kite flying, excursions, circus skills, abseiling and more.

SDBM TUITION

children suffering from skin disease often have long periods of absence from school and fall behind in their studies, leading to ramifications in their personal development and loss of confidence.

SDBM MAQUILLAGE

Advice on appearance (Skin Camouflage, Beauty & Body Image) - how to alleviate the psychological, physical and social effects that an altered image can have on someone’s life by the simple application of specialised skin camouflage products, dress etc

SKIN CLINIC UK

The SDBM Skin Clinic will offer education, advice and treatments.

BACK TO EMPLOYMENT

skin disease sufferers often face difficulties finding employment. This project provides training in the form of workshops and one-to-one advice sessions.

RESPITE THERAPY TRIP TO DEAD SEA JORDAN

the skin therapy centre uses Climatotherapy at the Dead Sea as an effective therapy for patients with skin conditions, such as Psoriasis, Eczema, Vitiligo and Acne who benefit from sunbathing for long periods in the area under the supervision of dermatologists.

ART THERAPY

can be used as a creative way to express and heal inner struggle

FASHION THERAPY

practical Clothing, Sun Protection - clothing, and the fabric clothing is made of, is one of the major problems many skin disease patients mention as making their pain, itchiness or skin irritation worse.

“ None of these projects would be a reality without your charitable donations. Thank you so much for your kind and considerate donations.

FASHION SHOW
There will be two fashion shows. The first will feature collections by up and coming new designers. The second will feature an exclusive collection from a world renowned designer.
Like skin disease, fashion and textiles are very much about touch, feel and of course, the visual impact. A fashion show is the perfect platform to promote SDBM’s message about skin awareness.

• The ‘Mala’ Exhibition comprising a unique and varied collection of mannequins

The prevalence of skin disease exceeds that of obesity, hypertension, or cancer. Despite skin being the largest organ of the human body, dermatological research remains one of the most under funded areas of medicine. In a world where society has an increasing preoccupation with image and it’s importance to every aspect of a person’s life, sufferers of skin diseases are feeling and being more marginalised and isolated than ever.
